Organizational Development Work:
Examples
Since its inception in 1994, Mosaica has provided organizational development assistance to well over 100 local, regional, and national nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and a similar number internationally – many very small, some very large. Most U.S. organizations assisted are minority-controlled or multicultural. Mosaica’s help is designed to strengthen these groups so they can provide high quality services to or advocacy on behalf of their communities and be sustainable, well-run nonprofit organizations. Mosaica also assists grantmakers, including foundations and grantmaking collaboratives, that serve communities of color.
Mosaica provides a wide range of services for boards, staff, and volunteers within nonprofit organizations – for example:

- resource development planning and fundraising assistance
- management audits
- personnel policies reviews and revisions
- restructuring support
- assistance in improving financial management and oversight
- assistance in program design and delivery

Assignments often include surveys or focus group work, interviews with key personnel and external stakeholders, Board and staff development sessions, facilitation of one or more strategic planning sessions, individualized consultation, and preparation of a variety of reports and how-to materials.
Mosaica supports such efforts through a variety of sources, among them:
- Management Assistance Grants from the Meyer Foundation and similar grants from the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region
- Funding from the Ford Foundation, Hyams Foundation, and Annie E. Casey Foundation
- Funding obtained by the client organization from various foundation sources (such as the Freddie Mac Foundation, the Packard Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and the Irvine Foundation)
- Support from grantmaker collaboratives (including the Washington AIDS Partnership, the Community Development Support Collaborative, Common Ground [formerly the Initiative to Strengthen Neighborhood Inter-Group Assets], and the Washington Area Partnership for Immigrants)
- Support from corporations and foundations such as Time-Warner and the Consumer Health Foundation to assist current and potential grantees
- Federal government funding through contracts, cooperative agreements, and professional services contracts

- Academy of Hope, Washington, DC (organization providing GED and computer training, largely through volunteer instructors) - assistance in carrying out an environmental scan, strategic planning, and Board development
- AFFIRM, Washington, DC (consumer-driven advocacy organization for Washington, DC residents affected by welfare reform and Medicaid managed care); organizational development assistance
- Alliance for Justice, Washington, DC (national organization that provides education and training around advocacy by nonprofit organizations and encourages community activism, including work on reducing gun violence) - organizational assessment (completed); database development; program evaluation; planning phase research on Board advocacy project
- Allies Against Asthma, Ann Arbor, MI (coordination and technical assistance effort supporting the national program funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which supports local asthma coalitions) – consultation on coalition building, collaborative fundraising, and related organizational issues
- Asian American LEAD, Washington, DC (successor organization to YLP; after-school and summer educational, counseling, and leadership development program for Asian American youth, especially recent immigrants, and their families) - assistance in becoming established as a nonprofit organization; obtaining tax-exempt status; setting up personnel, fiscal, and other management systems; adopting management and governance policies; Board development; planning; environmental scan and strategic planning
- Audubon Partnership for Economic Development, LDC, New York, NY (community development corporation in the Dominican American community) – strategic planning assistance
- Ayuda, Washington, DC (organization providing immigration-related legal services for immigrants and refugees, and services to immigrant women who have experienced domestic violence) - organizational audit and Board development, resource development, and strategic planning assistance (completed); sustainability consultation
- Carlos Rosario International Career Center, Washington, DC (adult education school for immigrants, originally a public school and now a nonprofit organization and charter school) - assistance in establishing an operational nonprofit organization, obtaining tax-exempt status, resource development, Board development, and strategic planning
- CASA of Maryland, Silver Spring, MD (organization providing social services and advocacy for Central American immigrants and refugees) – strategic planning assistance, including organizational assessment, management structure review, and facilitation of an inclusive planning and decision-making process
- City at Peace, Washington, DC (multicultural youth program that uses theater to promote youth development and leadership) - program evaluation, Board development, and strategic planning assistance
- Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, (CHCI), Washington, DC (leadership institute that brings Hispanic young adults to DC to serve as fellow and interns and has national initiatives on issues like affordable housing; established by Hispanic Congressmembers) – policy training to fellow and interns, national focus group study of Latino home ownership, consultation on planning and governance
- Damien Ministries, Washington, DC (organization providing case management, food, and other services for people living with HIV/AIDS) – environmental scan and strategic planning assistance
- DC Action for Children, Washington, DC (child advocacy organization) – environmental scan and strategic planning, with a focus on volunteer leadership transition
- DC CARE Consortium, Washington, DC(Ryan White CARE Act Title II consortium, providing a variety of services and planning activities related to HIV/AIDS care) - assistance in strategic planning and organizational decision making
- DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Washington, DC (coalition that advocates and provides services to fight domestic violence) – assistance in strategic organizing and organizational development, including major organizational restructuring
- Excelensia in Education, Washington, DC (national organization working to improve Latino entry and success in higher education) – start-up assistance and ongoing assistance in establishing and managing an Honorary Board

- Hispanics Against Child Abuse and Neglect (HACAN), Northern Virginia (promotes educational programs to increase public awareness of, and thereby help prevent, child abuse and neglect, with emphasis on Latino families in Northern Virginia) – organizational assessment and strategic planning
- Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR), Washington, DC (coalition of national Latino organizations designed to work with major corporations to increase their involvement with and support of Hispanic organizations) - facilitation of Board strategic planning and organizational decision-making process
- Hispanic Federation, New York, NY (regional umbrella organization that assists a membership of more than 90 Latino community-based groups in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania) – wide range of assignments to assist the Federation and its member organizations, including resource development training to HIV/AIDS groups that are Federation members; assistance in project to increase the capacity of organizational consultants to effectively serve Latino organizations; training of technical ssistance staff; capacity-building training and technical assistance to member organizations on how to develop strong volunteer programs; leadership transition assistance to the Federation; development of trainer curricula for individual donors on Board membership; facilitation of a planning process for development of a collaborative project on teen pregnancy prevention
- Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF), Washington, DC (national organization that that promotes Hispanic culture, education, and accomplishment by honoring Latino leaders and supporting emerging leaders through scholarships and workforce opportunities) – organizational assessment and assistance in organizational development focusing on management systems, financial management, resource development, and governance
- Hispanic Scholarship Fund Institute, Washington, DC (recently established national organization working in cooperation with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, focusing on increasing Hispanic higher education achievement through public scholarships, public education about Latino educational status, and other initiatives) – assistance in establishing an office in Washington, DC, strategic planning, and organizational development
- Home Education Livelihood Program (HELP), Inc., Albuquerque, NM (statewide human services and advocacy organization) – assistance in Board evelopment, short-term planning, strategic planning., and development of a process for evaluating the Executive Director
- Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers (HAND), Arlington, VA and Bethesda, MD (membership organization that works to increase the capacity of nonprofit affordable housing developers and service providers in the DC metro area through free technical training and networking opportunities) – environmental scan and strategic planning assistance

- League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Washington, DC (national Latino membership organization) - self-analysis and strategic planning for organization as a whole and for Policy Committee, including attention to membership and fundraising; updating of strategic plan with focus on embership
- Legal Services Corporation, Washington, DC (national organization established by Congress to coordinate and oversee federally funded legal services to the poor) –facilitation of Board of Directors self-appraisal and planning process; training to state and local legal services corporations on use of the logic model in evaluation
- Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, Baltimore MD (national faith-based immigration and refugee services organization with diverse programs ranging from refugee placement and resettlement to long-term services to refugees and immigrants with an extensive national network; includes many rograms for youth) – in-depth organizational assessment, environmental scanning, and strategic planning process that generated a strategic plan as well as staff work plans and led to structural changes including a project spin-off
- Mary’s Center for Maternal and Child Care, Washington, DC (maternal and child health clinic that serves primarily Latino and other immigrants) – pro bono assistance in organizational assessment and strategic planning, facilitation of strategic planning retreats, and assistance in strategic plan development

- National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA), Washington, DC (national organization that assists and serves as a voice for people living with HIV/AIDS) – assistance in developing a Spanish-language “passport” on managed care to help people with HIV/AIDS get needed services; staff training on evaluation; assistance in staff leadership transition
- National Coalition of Pastors’ Spouses (NCPS), Memphis, TN (national organization focusing on health education and awareness in the African American community and working through pastors’ spouses and churches ) – organizational and resource development assistance
- National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP), Washington, DC (national organization that does research, policy analysis, advocacy, and creative programming to make philanthropic entities more responsive and accountable) – Assistance in Board assessment, strategic planning and priority setting
- National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), Washington, DC (Building the New American Community, an Office of Refugee Resettlement-funded project that supports multicultural coalitions of immigrant and mainstream organizations in several cities to support “integration” of immigrant and refugee communities) – training for coalitions in Nashville, TN and Lowell, MA on planning, strengthening coalition structure and relationships, and related topics
- National Hispana Leadership Institute, Arlington, VA (national leadership program for Latina professionals) - Board and resource development audit, Board and strategic planning assistance, and program evaluation
- National Latino Children’s Institute, San Antonio, TX (national organization focusing on Latino child development and safety) – assistance in recruiting and hiring a new Executive Director
- National Rural Health Association (NRHA), Alexandria, VA and Kansas City, MO (member-driven national organization that exists to improve the health of rural Americans ) – resource development and strategic planning assistance; facilitation of both Board and staff retreats
- New Bosnia Fund, Sarajevo (organization that provides capacity-building assistance to other nongovernmental organizations in the former Yugoslavia; co-founded by the Mosaica President and assisted by Mosaica from its inception), nongovernmental organizations throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina (periodic training and on-site assistance) and in Croatia (series of training sessions and individualized consultation)
- Newcomer Community Service Center, Washington, DC (provides refugee resettlement and a variety of services to immigrants) – organizational assessment, Board development, and strategic and resource development planning assistance
- Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE), San Diego, CA (statewide organization providing training to parents so they can become actively involved with the schools and in their children’s education; focus on Latino and immigrant parents) – organizational assessment (completed) and resource development assistance
- Pediatric AIDS/HIV Care, Washington, DC (services to children with HIV/AIDS and their families) – Board development and strategic planning assistance
- Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, Washington, DC (Presidentially appointed council to advise the President and the Secretary of Health and Human Services regarding HIV/AIDS policies and programs) – facilitation of a strategic planning retreat; assistance with final progress report to the President
- PreventionWorks!, Washington, DC (harm reduction and needle exchange program) – in-depth organizational assistance to support the organization’s transition from a project of a large clinic to an independent nonprofit organization; included assistance with every aspect of organizational development, management systems, resource development, and Board development; financial management assistance
- The Rosemount Center, Washington, DC (Head Start and child care center) – organizational assistance to the Board of Directors including a governance/management audit, extensive environmental scan to review of services and relationships, and two Board retreats in order to help the organization determine future service priorities and facilities needs
- SHATIL, Jerusalem, Israel (capacity-building center of the New Israel Fund, which works to advance democracy, tolerance, peace, and human rights in Israel) – many years of organizational development services, including organizational audits, staff development assistance, training for staff, and training and organizational consultation to client organizations, Palestinian and Jewish, among them women’s organizations, Ethiopian and Russian immigrant groups, and Bedouin organizations
- Shaw EcoVillage, Washington, DC (youth development organization engaged in programs designed to enable youth to create sustainable economic, environmental, and social change) – financial management assessment, budgeting assistance, resource development assistance to the staff and Board, and assistance in staff leadership transition
- Somali Family Care Network, Alexandria, VA(project to develop and build the capacity of a network of emerging and established Somali community-based organizations) – skill-development sessions for Somali organizational leaders to help them build sustainable community-based organizations providing a range of services to and advocacy on behalf of Somali refugees and immigrants; includes a series of sessions on coalition building and collaboration
- Teaching for Change (formerly Network of Educators on the Americas,Washington, DC (education reform and support organization) – organizational assessment; organizational consultation; facilitation of Board
- United States Embassy, Tel Aviv, Israel – series of resource development training sessions for nongovernmental organizations in Israel and the territories, nder the sponsorship of what was the U.S. Information Service and is now a part of the embassy
- U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (URSCRI ), formerly Immigrant and Refugee Services of America (IRSA), Washington, DC (national organization involved in refugee and immigrant services, research, and policy and advocacy work) – assistance in strategic planning focusing on organizational structure and priorities; facilitation of Board retreat focusing on strategic directions and governance
- VOICES for America’s Children (formerly National Association of Child Advocates), Washington, DC – ongoing consultation, including three years of work with Board and staff to develop Essential Elements for effective child advocacy organizations and a process for self- or external assessment of member organizations based on these elements, which now serve as a basis for member capacity-building; pilot use of the Essential Elements model in five locations; facilitation of Board planning and development sessions; consultation on fiscal issues; training on Board development issues at national conference; assistance in organizational restructuring; multi-year evaluation of national advocacy and media activities
