Core Values >

Mosaica: The Center for Nonprofit Development and Pluralism is an organization whose name reflects the values that inspire its work. Mosaica is the feminized form of mosaic in Spanish and is a commonly used word for mosaic in Arabic and Hebrew. Just as a mosaic is made of many components that together create a unified whole, Mosaica brings together individuals with diverse voices and experience to create an organization with a set of common values. The symbolism is similar to that of the U.S. motto, e pluribus unum (“from many, one”).

Mosaica was established out of a commitment to social justice and a belief that within the United States and throughout the world, societies that strive for democracy, human rights,
peace, individual opportunity, and pluralism must be built and maintained from the bottom up – community by community, group by group – with the active involvement of nonprofit organizations and a strong independent sector.

Mosaica's Board and staff believe in certain core values that define the work we do externally and the ways we interact internally. These values represent the standards we set for ourselves individually and as an organization. Our work must always be values-based.

These are Mosaica's core values:

  • Diversity and Pluralism. Mosaica's staff, Board, and clients and the communities it serves are enriched by inclusion, cooperation, and partnerships across the lines of race, ethnicity, class, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, and many other characteristics that often divide people and groups. Mosaica is effective because it strives to ensure that its Board, staff, consultants, and clients reflect and value varying backgrounds and experiences.

  • Commitment to Empowerment. Mosaica recognizes that the ability and leadership potential of individuals are not necessarily related to their level of education, access to resources, or other social advantages. The organization’s special commitment is to strengthen and support entities committed to serving and empowering those whose voices are least likely to be heard when public policies are adopted and resources allocated. Mosaica provides capacity-building support and assistance to nonprofit organizations committed to community empowerment.

  • Ethics and Integrity. As a social change organization, Mosaica must hold itself to the highest possible standards of ethics and integrity. The organization and the individuals who are part of it will behave ethically in all aspects of their work and show integrity in consistently standing by those ethical values.

  • Teamwork and Collaboration. Mosaica works in teams involving both senior and mid-level or junior staff, and encourages collaborative networks within organizations and communities. This approach, which includes cross-sector collaboration, enriches and strengthens Mosaica’s work and models an operating style that is effective for other nonprofit organizations.

  • Commitment to Social Justice. Mosaica believes that all individuals have the right to freedom, a safe environment, the basic necessities of life, and the opportunity to fully develop their potential. The life opportunities of individuals and groups should be determined by their capacities and efforts, not by social barriers and conditions beyond their control.

  • Quality. Mosaica is committed to excellence in all its work. Teamwork and diversity help ensure the effectiveness of its materials, training, consultation, and other services and products. All its activities are designed to meet the specific needs of individual clients. Mosaica's reputation for consistent high-quality work continues to be its best marketing strategy.
